Makeup
Natural vs. Media
As was mentioned previously, cosmetic products are often considered a necessity. Below is a range of examples of media portrayal of natural beauty. Some show faces with makeup versus without while others are examples of advertisements with a focus on the 'natural' look or the transformative powers of makeup.
Eyes
The above video is just one example of the ridiculous insinuations of the power of makeup. Commercial advertisements and other forms of media are constantly portraying makeup has having some kind of power over a person and their abilities.
Makeup can help someone feel more confident in their natural skin. Below is a video of Cheri Lindsay, a woman with vitiligo who uses makeup to be comfortable in her own skin. However, makeup does not transform a person entirely.
Lips
Natural-ish beauty
The above video is a humorous advertisement for a product that 'naturally' plumps lips, giving women that desired pouty look without going as far as procedures like lip injections. The commercial pokes fun at the media and makeup advertisement industry while also attempting to sell a product that will help alter one's appearance, giving us a perfect example of double-standards in advertisement media. Women can believe in 'natural' beauty, but still 'care enough' about their appearances to conform to what advertisement media (like this commercial) is telling them is beautiful.
